The Importance of Defining Professional Qualifications in the Leather Goods Sector

In a highly specialised sector such as leather goods manufacturing, where product quality largely depends on the technical knowledge and craftsmanship of those who produce it, the proper definition of professional categories becomes a key element for the development and competitiveness of companies. Clearly establishing the functions, skills, and knowledge associated with each job position allows companies to organise production processes more efficiently and make better use of the talent available within their organisations.

When professional categories are well defined, each worker can perform their tasks in the position that best matches their competencies and qualifications. This not only improves company productivity but also promotes a fairer and more transparent working environment, where responsibilities, expectations, and opportunities for professional development are clearly established.

Aware of this need, ASOPIEL has launched, together with workers’ representatives, the Professional Qualifications Table, a space for dialogue and joint work aimed at analysing and defining more precisely the characteristics of the different job positions within the leather goods sector.

Through this initiative, the goal is to identify the functions associated with each position, as well as the skills, technical knowledge, and competencies that workers must acquire in order to progress within the sector’s professional scale. In this way, the intention is to build a clearer and more coherent professional development system that allows workers to understand the steps required to advance in their careers.

One of the key elements of this initiative is linking professional progression with training. The objective is for workers to move up the salary scale according to the skills and knowledge they acquire throughout their professional careers. To achieve this, it is essential to guarantee both the right and the responsibility to receive training appropriate to the professional level of each worker.

In this context, the Professional Qualifications Table also aims to orient training towards the real needs of the sector. Training must be a practical tool that contributes to improving companies’ productive capacities while strengthening the qualifications of the professionals working within them.

This approach is fully aligned with the work ASOPIEL is carrying out within the European Erasmus+ “Learning Factories” project, an initiative designed to improve training systems in the leather goods sector through collaboration between companies and training institutions. The project promotes the active participation of companies in the design of training programmes so that they respond to the real needs of the sector.

In this way, defining professional qualifications and developing training programmes become complementary elements: on the one hand, identifying the competencies required by the sector; on the other, designing training tools that enable these competencies to be acquired. All of this contributes to building a more modern, flexible, and production-oriented training model.

Advancing in the definition of professional categories and qualifications therefore represents an important step in strengthening the leather goods sector, improving companies’ competitiveness, and offering workers a clearer and more accessible path for professional growth.
